Road
safety is one of those topics about which a lot is being said and little is
done. People blame government for the accidents and road mishaps, but they have
to understand that it is people like them who drive and walk on the road.
Riding
without helmet, driving without fastening seat belts are some of the most
common traffic rule violations. When those individuals are fined for their
ignorance they argue with the statements like “You didn’t catch that guy, see he is also not following the rules”. Such
a behavior to point finger at others can never be helpful in improving the
traffic. It is us who has to take the initiate to bring the change.
By
following simple and easy traffic rules you can save your and someone else’s
life too. There are numerous cases of drunk driving in which the sober victim
has to pay the ultimate price. Useless honking while signal is red is not going
to help in anyways in turning the red signal to green.
Many
a times people say that they follow rules but it is others who don’t let them
follow rules. It is one of the most untrue and vague statements. If someone is
honking at you just because you stopped at red light does not mean you have to
jump the red light, if someone is not using horn before overtaking then you don’t
have to do the same and same is for all other situations.
Few
days back I had an encounter while I was riding to the local market place. A
guy from behind kept honking, not to mention with his extra loud pressure horns.
I gave him side to overtake, which he did. He drove in a fancy manner through
the relatively small streets. The street connected to the main road and as I
reached that intersection I saw the guy standing with a police officer. Even I was
stopped by the police but they left me after checking my papers but because he
was not wearing helmet and had a fancy number plate which led him to a heavy
fine. This time the violator just paid the price with the fine but same will
not be case for many. For some fine would be their lives and is worst when such
violators take someone else’s life.
With
the big brands coming to raise awareness among people for the cause, the
condition seems to be improving and there is a hope for a better traffic.
Nissan Safety Driving Forum (NSFD) is one such attempt to raise awareness among
individuals for safe driving in India. It has already reached 2 lakh
individuals and growing strongly. The NSFD has covered various cities Mumbai,
New Delhi, Chennai are few of them. We should also come out and make
contributions to this event and make Indian roads a lot safer and driving on
Indian roads safer.
